How to Find and Fix a Leaking Garden Hose Connector

A drip at the tap does not always mean you need a new hose. The fault may be a seal, a mismatched fitting or a connection that has not seated correctly. Start by identifying the exact point where water escapes, then work on that connection with the water supply turned off.

Locate the leak before buying parts

With the system in normal use, look at each connection in turn: the tap thread, the quick-connect joint, the point where the hose enters the connector and the watering attachment. Keep your hands clear of a powerful spray. Once you have located the leak, turn off the tap, release pressure through the nozzle and disconnect the affected fitting.

Inspect seals and seating

Clean away grit so you can inspect the fitting properly. Look for a missing, split or flattened visible seal and for cracked plastic or damaged threads. Hozelock's Superhoze care notes identify incorrect tap-connector seating, worn O-rings and incorrectly assembled connectors as possible causes of leaks. Use a replacement seal specified for your fitting, rather than choosing one only because it looks similar.

Reconnect squarely and according to the instructions. If a fitting will not seat normally, stop and check compatibility; extra force is not a reliable repair.

Check the hose diameter

The Hozelock Hose End Connector Plus and Pro connector in our range are listed for 12.5mm and 15mm hose. That does not make them universal replacements for every hose. Check both the hose diameter and the connector instructions before fitting one.

On a conventional hose, check that the retaining parts are assembled correctly and the hose is properly inserted. Hozelock's connector fitting guidance explains the assembly sequence. If the end is damaged or the fitting is cracked, identify the correct repair or replacement for that specific product.

Know when to stop

Expanding hoses and sealed retractable reels need model-specific advice. Do not cut and repair a Superhoze as if it were a conventional hose; Hozelock says not to repair a damaged Superhoze. For an Auto Reel, do not open the spring-loaded casing or attempt to repair its hose. Contact the retailer or manufacturer with the model, photographs and proof of purchase where available.

Test the connection again

After reassembly, restore the supply carefully and check the same joint while the hose is in use. Turn the tap off afterwards and release pressure. If the leak remains, avoid buying several speculative replacements: ask us for help identifying the connection.

Browse fittings and connectors, or use our buying guide to check the whole setup. Before winter, follow our hose storage checklist to reduce avoidable frost damage.
