Wall-Mounted Hose Reel or Hose Cart: Which Should You Choose?
A hose reel should make both watering and putting the hose away easier. Start with where you use the hose and where it will live: a wall-mounted reel suits a fixed watering point, while a cart can be moved between storage and the area you are working in.
Choose a wall-mounted reel for a fixed position
A wall-mounted reel keeps the hose stored at a chosen point near your watering route. Before ordering, check that the wall and fixings are suitable for the particular reel, that the hose can reach the areas you need, and that there is room to use the handle or swivel mechanism. Follow the product's installation instructions.
It is also worth checking the tap connection. The hose that reaches your plants and the feeder hose connecting the reel to the tap have different jobs. The mounting position must work for both.
Choose a cart when you want to move the storage
A hose cart lets you move the reel to a different working position or put it away elsewhere after use. Consider the surface you will move it over, any steps in the route and how you will connect it to the tap. A portable reel still needs an appropriate water connection while you use it.
Check whether a cart is sold empty or supplied with a hose. For example, our Hozelock 60m-capacity hose cart is an empty cart. The assembled hose cart listing offers hose-length variants. Choose the variant and check its availability and included fittings before ordering.
Manual winding and automatic rewind are different choices
Mounting style does not tell you how a reel rewinds. A wall-mounted reel can be manually wound, while an Auto Reel uses an automatic rewind mechanism. Likewise, an automatic hose-layering system can guide the hose onto a reel while you still turn a handle.
The Hozelock Wall Mounted Fast Reel includes a 40m hose and uses manual winding with automatic layering. Our Hozelock Auto Reel listing provides automatic-rewind options in several lengths. Check the selected model's installation and operating instructions.
Five details to compare
- Working reach: measure the route around obstacles, not just the distance across the lawn.
- Supplied hose: distinguish the length included from the reel's maximum capacity.
- Diameter: check that your existing hose and connectors match the reel's requirements.
- Installation: confirm the mounting surface, required fittings and space around the reel.
- Putting it away: consider how you will wind, move and store the equipment after use.
Which option fits your garden?
If you always water from one area and have a suitable mounting point, start by comparing wall-mounted reels. If moving the hose storage is useful, start with carts and portable reels. If you already own a suitable hose, an empty reel may be enough; otherwise compare complete sets carefully.
