What Length Garden Hose Do I Need? A Practical Measuring Guide
The right garden hose length is the one that comfortably reaches your furthest watering point along the route you actually use. A straight measurement across the lawn can be misleading if the hose needs to pass around a patio, greenhouse or planted bed.
Measure the route before choosing a size
- Start at the tap or reel position. If you are buying a wall-mounted reel, measure from its planned mounting point and check the separate connection back to the tap.
- Follow your normal watering route. Lay a tape measure or a piece of string along the ground, going around the obstacles you want to avoid.
- Include the furthest job. Think about pots near the front door, the far end of a border and any area you clean with the hose.
- Allow room to move. Choose enough reach to handle the spray gun comfortably without pulling the hose tight. Do not rely on stretching a conventional hose to make up the difference.
Turn your measurement into a buying decision
For example, a route measuring 23 metres leaves very little working room with a 25m hose. A 30m option gives more flexibility, provided you also have somewhere to store it. A small courtyard with a 9-metre route is a different problem: buying a 50m hose adds more hose to carry and put away than the space requires.
These are examples, not garden-size rules. Two gardens with the same floor area can need different hose lengths because their taps and paths are in different places.
Check what the advertised length means
- Hose length: the length of hose supplied with that product or selected variant.
- Reel capacity: the maximum length a reel can hold for a specified hose diameter. A 60m-capacity reel may be sold empty or with a shorter hose.
- Feeder hose: the connection between the tap and reel. Check whether it is supplied separately or needs to be cut from the main hose.
- Expanding hose: check the stated working length and the manufacturer's operating requirements before comparing it with a conventional hose.
Match the length to a storage option
A longer hose also needs a practical home. A portable cart can be useful when you move between different watering areas; a wall-mounted reel keeps storage in one position. Check the reel's capacity for the diameter of your chosen hose, rather than comparing length alone.
Our Hozelock Ultimate hose listing offers 30m and 50m variants with a 12.5mm diameter. Select the required length to see its current availability. For a setup with storage included, compare the contents of our available hose reels and carts.
Before you order
Write down your measured route, hose diameter, preferred storage type and the fittings you already own. Then check the selected product's included accessories. A hose-only listing and a hose-and-fittings kit are different purchases.
